What We’re Leaving Behind This Fall

Summertime can be filled with vacations, extra family time, and slower paced schedules. As we head into the final stretch of the year, fall offers a natural opportunity to take stock of what’s working, what isn’t, and where we want to focus our energy as the days get shorter and our lives feel like they ramp up from zero to one hundred. While the changing season often brings a renewed sense of momentum, it also invites us to leave behind beliefs or habits that no longer serve us.

We polled our DCGers to hear their thoughts on what they’re prioritizing to finish the year strong, and what we learned was a shared understanding of how a positive outlook can make managing workloads easier and what outdated mindsets can end up hindering quality work.

Leaving Behind the “Busy = Productive” Mindset

For years, many industries have celebrated busyness as a badge of honor. Full calendars, overflowing inboxes, and back-to-back meetings have often been mistaken for meaningful progress.

Of course, that description could represent someone who’s getting a lot done. But when you’re spinning too many plates, you might find yourself unbalanced and unable to give your all to each task.

Productivity doesn’t always have to mean having a never-ending to-do list. Productivity can mean choosing what tasks to complete with urgency and what tasks can hold until they can be done with intention and proper focus. A team truly works as a team when, through collaboration, they know where to direct energy, where to use their strongest players, and when to regroup.

Leaving Behind the Myth That Growth Requires Burnout

A common misconception is that sustainable success must require the expense of wellbeing. Working hard and growing professionally shouldn’t cost you in other areas of your personal life. DCGers recognize that long-term success depends on maintaining balance along the way.

When we asked our team what their biggest focus is as we head into year-end, the majority agreed work-life balance was a big priority for the fall.

So this season, we’re leaving behind the idea that pushing yourself to a breaking point is the answer. Instead, we’re embracing the belief that people do their best work when they have the space to show up as their best selves.

Leaving Behind Reactive Work

Another theme emerging among DCGers is intentionality.

When asked about the mindset they’re bringing into the last quarter of the year, our team shared top responses like planning in advance, organization, positivity, and relaxing more.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there was also strong enthusiasm for pumpkin spice season.

But beyond some shared seasonal favorites, these responses highlight a shared understanding that being proactive creates flexibility. When we take the time to plan ahead and stay organized, we reduce unnecessary stress, avoid last-minute scrambling, and give ourselves more flexibility to adapt when priorities shift. That sense of control creates space to work more confidently, maintain a positive outlook, and enjoy a healthier work-life balance.

We’re all for embracing the idea that preparation isn’t the opposite of flexibility. It’s what makes flexibility possible.

As we move toward year-end, we’re leaving behind what doesn’t serve us and focusing on creating an environment where people can continue showing up as their best selves. We’re choosing thoughtful planning over chaos, meaningful progress over constant busyness, and sustainable growth over burnout.

Fall isn’t just about turning the page on another season. It’s about deciding what deserves to move forward with us.

And if our team’s responses are any indication, we’re moving forward with positivity, organization, and a whole lot of pumpkin spice!
