What the World Cup Teaches Us About Building a Winning Team at DCG

With this year’s World Cup kicking off on June 11, stadiums will be filling across host cities in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, and billions will be tuning in around the world. Yet its global appeal extends far beyond the goals and matches themselves.

Countries from around the world bring together players from different leagues and backgrounds, and in a matter of weeks, transform them into a cohesive unit competing for the same end goal.

While our “field” may look different, the same values that drive success at the World Cup are just as essential at DCG.

One of the clearest examples is how teams align. In the World Cup, players who normally compete against one another are suddenly working toward a shared goal and relying on communication, trust, and clearly defined roles.

DCG operates in a similarly dynamic environment, especially as a fully remote organization. We bring together team members across perspectives, areas of expertise, and locations — including individuals based in cities that host some of the games themselves. Success depends on our ability to collaborate effectively, align around common objectives, and execute with precision.

For us, trust shows up in everyday moments. Whether it’s a manager supporting a flexible schedule, a team member proactively communicating priorities, or colleagues recognizing each other’s contributions across projects.

We know life happens and caring for yourself and your family helps you show up as your best self at work. Even the best coaches understand that sustaining peak performance requires intentional recovery and balance.

But performance at that level doesn’t come from alignment alone. It requires the right environment for people to thrive.

In a recent team poll, DCGers shared what they think helps keep morale high.

It’s no coincidence that this mirrors what we see on the world stage, where elite teams rely on recovery, trust, and strong relationships to perform under intense pressure match after match.

When people feel supported and recognized, the impact is clear, not just in day-to-day performance, but over time. Many DCG employees have been with the company for more than five years, demonstrating that this approach not only supports productivity, but also long-term retention and satisfaction. Just like athletes at the highest level, our team members deliver their best work when they’re operating at a sustainable pace.

Success Doesn’t Happen by Accident

Just as World Cup teams rely on much preparation leading up to the tournament, success at DCG is equally intentional.

Early in the first quarter, the DCG executive leadership team establishes company-wide goals across business development, delivery, finance, and HR. These goals are then shared across the organization, creating a clear direction for everyone.

From there, each employee sets personal and professional goals — at least one of which is directly tied to those corporate priorities. This ensures that every individual contribution is connected to the company’s broader mission.

Celebrating Wins Wherever We Are

From last-minute goals to dramatic upsets, World Cup celebrations are unforgettable. Those celebrations fuel momentum and strengthen team identity.

We’ve built intentional ways to celebrate wins at DCG even in a fully remote environment:

  • A monthly CEO newsletter highlights company updates and employee kudos
  • A monthly all-hands meeting creates space to recognize achievements, share milestones, and keep everyone connected to the bigger picture
  • Social media posts highlight team kudos, employee spotlights, and other wins

These touchpoints ensure that successes, both large and small, are visible and celebrated across the organization. To us, recognition isn’t necessarily about looking back — it’s about building energy for what comes next.

Building Culture Through Community

Beyond matches, the World Cup is also about connection. Across time zones, fans gather in living rooms, offices, and public spaces to watch matches and share in the experience.

At DCG, we prioritize that same sense of connection through engagement initiatives.

Our company-wide wellness challenges are a great example. Last year, employees came together over the summer to track activities like reading, walking, biking, and hiking.

This year, we’re continuing that momentum with a new challenge as we approach the nation’s 250th birthday on July 4. These initiatives create opportunities for connection, reinforce community, and remind us that strong teams are built both inside and outside of work.

Ultimately, this culture doesn’t just benefit our employees; it’s what enables us to consistently deliver high-quality results for our clients.

As teams take the field this summer, the World Cup offers a powerful reminder that whether competing in front of the world or delivering high-quality work for our clients, success comes down to the same fundamentals. Trust, flexibility, preparation, and alignment are the qualities that turn a group of individuals into a truly winning team.
